This is the final link in Northcote’s new 1.5km greenway.
What a beautiful way to start to the day!
At dawn on Friday 11 September, Ngai Tai ki Tamaki, Ngaati Whanaunga, Ngāti Tamaterā and Awataha Marae blessed the completed town centre section of Te Ara Awataha before opening it to the public.
What was once a grass mound and a few car parks is now a delightful green space featuring the resurfaced Awataha Stream, a new footpath, improved side access to Northcote Intermediate, better stormwater management and more than 5,000 new native plants
Te Ara Awataha is an award-winning project that is the result of years of collaborative between Auckland Council, Kāinga Ora, mana whenua, Kaipātiki Local Board, and community organisations and volunteers, including Northcote Intermediate School.
Many thanks to everyone who helped bring this section to life, including Glasgow Contractors, Isthmus Group, TSA Riley, Riley Consultants, Woods and Partners, Mitchel Vranjes and ECS, and the many people that have contributed along the way.
Te Ara Awataha will be fully complete when the upgraded Puāwai Cadness Reserve opens to the public in late 2027.
