We will deliver an outstanding new Northcote community hub and upgraded Puāwai Cadness Reserve in late 2027.
But these projects are creating valuable opportunities for local people now.
In partnership with our contractor, NZ Strong Group, two Northcote College students, Taysoe and VJ, are gaining hands-on experience in the construction industry through the school's Gateway Programme.
The Gateway Programme is a funded secondary school initiative that gives senior students structured, real-world workplace learning alongside their studies. As part of the programme, Taysoe and VJ have spent one day a week on site over the past five weeks, learning from the professionals helping to deliver this significant community project.
Working alongside site managers, quantity surveyors and subcontractors, the students have gained practical insights into how a large construction project operates and the range of career opportunities available in the sector.
The initiative encourages more young people to consider careers in construction, to support the development of a skilled local workforce.
For both students, who are interested in pursuing apprenticeships after leaving school this year, the experience has provided valuable exposure to the industry.
"I've enjoyed meeting new people and learning new skills and would recommend the programme to anyone wanting construction experience," said VJ.
Taysoe said the placement had helped him decide on his future career path.
"I wasn't sure what trade I wanted to do in the future, but now I'm confident I'd like to be a builder."
The Gateway Programme is one of several social outcomes initiatives being delivered through the project.
NZ Strong Group is also working to increase the use of local suppliers, including Māori and Pasifika-owned businesses, and supporting other trade training opportunities for Aucklanders.
Together, these initiatives are helping ensure the project leaves a legacy - creating opportunities for local people while delivering new community facilities for future generations.
