Neighbourhood Maungawhau Station

The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45-kilometre twin-tunnel underground rail link that will unlock Auckland’s public transport network and transform the way people travel around the city.

It's the largest transport infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand. The rail link connects Waitematā and Maungawhau stations with the creation of two brand new underground stations - Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape.

What was the Mt Eden train station is being upgraded into Maungawhau Station - a major rail interchange for people travelling to and from the city centre on the Western Line.

The name Maungawhau means ‘hill of the whau (cork) tree’, in reference to the nearby volcanic cone, Mt Eden/Maungawhau. Maungawhau was previously an enormous Māori pā - a citadel built for thousands of inhabitants and at 196m tall, is the highest volcano in Auckland. The station is based in the Uptown precinct, which encompasses Eden Terrace, and parts of Grafton and Newton. The idea of ‘Uptown’ as a precinct is recent but the neighbourhoods there are some of the city's oldest and most storied.

The development of the land surrounding the station has the potential to further transform and enhance the Uptown precinct as a thriving, accessible, and innovative neighbourhood that embraces its unique heritage and diverse community.
