Make Space brings new energy to Maungawhau Station surrounds

Aucklanders are being invited to discover Make Space, a new placemaking initiative transforming the areas surrounding Maungawhau Station into a vibrant community destination filled with art, a new market, recreation and family-friendly activities.
Delivered by Auckland Council’s Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO), Make Space activates future development sites surrounding the station with a new creative space.
Initially the space will include interactive public art, a new weekly Sunday market, seating and shade areas. Towards summer, expect to see a new bike hub, park and picnic area.
AUDO Manager of Placemaking Frith Walker says the initiative builds on the excitement already surrounding the new station and the new Auckland Rapid Transit network (ART).
“Make Space is a terrific new destination right on the doorstep of the new rail network,” says Walker.
“Step off the train at Maungawhau Station and discover Make Space, a place where you can connect, have fun with the family and enjoy everything from public art activations to markets and community workshops.
“Activating these sites around the station prior to future development ensures they contribute positively to the area and create a vibrant, safe and welcoming place for its communities.
This transitional use activation programme is how we help look after and guide a space that still has a lot of development to come” says Walker.
The first art attraction to arrive is the award-winning, interactive Rainbow Machine, encouraging visitors to create rainbows by directing sunlight through the installation.
Councillor Julie Fairey says the placemaking programme will help guide the precinct’s transition into a thriving community.
“Maungawhau has already become my favourite train station, and one of my kids helped me try out the Rainbow Machine at the CRL Opening Day.
“A weekly market and more fun activities take the station to the next level as a destination to check out. This will help the existing Uptown neighbourhood, with residents, businesses and some great hospo and retail options, who have had a tough time during construction.
“Auckland Urban Development Office is working with potential partners on the long-term development around the station, making sure it is carefully planned and delivered to enhance and connect with Uptown.
“Activations like this help us to see the shape of an exciting future for Maungawhau. They are important opportunities for longtime locals, new residents and visitors to mix and become a strong community,” she says.
A key feature of Make Space is the new Maungawhau Market coming to this precinct every Sunday from 9.30am to 2pm.
Located directly outside Maungawhau Station, visitors are encouraged to travel by train and enjoy a day of shopping, eating and connecting with the community.
The Maungawhau Market is presented in partnership with The Village Square Trust. Make Space is made possible by Auckland Council and delivered through AUDO’s Placemaking Programme in collaboration with Fresh Concept.
