Make space at Maungawhau
Ongoing

- In Progress
- Urban regeneration
Prior to development on the sites around Maungawhau Station, a placemaking activation programme has been created to enliven the area for the community and station users in the interim.
The programme is designed to evolve over time, from early, light-touch, activations on the ground to longer and more established programmes that deliver long-term benefits for the area.
The programme has been developed in collaboration with the local boards, mana whenua, Uptown Business Association and through engagement and surveying with the community.
Phase 1 (2026 - 2027)
The first phase will focus on testing new activities and events to create a vibrant and welcoming community space.
A Bike Hub, delivered in partnership with Auckland Transport and operated by a local bike retailer, will operate as a community space that offers free basic bike repairs, affordable bike sales, and information and advice.

A series of trial markets will run until the end of 2026, helping shape plans for a potential semi-permanent market from 2027 onwards. These markets will showcase local businesses, community groups, fresh produce, baked goods, crafts, and pre-loved items.
Flexible, low-cost furniture, shade canopies, and small structures will be installed to support a variety of community events, workshops, and activities.
Testing will also begin on ways to strengthen connections between Maungawhau Station and the Uptown neighbourhood via Nikau Street.
Future phases (2027–2030)
The second phase will focus on establishing a regular programme of events and activities that make the space a destination for locals and visitors.
The final phase will focus on creating long-term benefits for the neighbourhood, ensuring the space remains active, adaptable, and resilient as surrounding development and construction begins.
