Te Waihorotiu, opening on 13 September 2026, will be New Zealand's busiest passenger rail station.

Located on Albert Street, with entrances on both Wellesley and Victoria Streets, the station will bring Aucklanders from all corners to the midtown precinct hub of employment, study, entertainment, hospitality and culture

The station provides easier and faster access to the businesses, universities, the International Convention Centre and the civic and cultural institutions that characterise Auckland's "Midtown".

The name Te Waihorotiu has been gifted by mana whenua in recognition of the Waihorotiu Stream and wetlands that flowed past the Horotiu pā into Te Waitematā. It was a place of cultural significance that provided a vital source of wellbeing and sustenance to local iwi over many generations.

Underground rail tunnels connect Te Waihorotiu Station to the new Karanga-a-Hape Station in the south and to a revitalised Waitematā Station (Britomart) in the north.

Trains will run every 10 minutes to the west, east and south, and the design is future proofed for a North Shore line.

The station itself was designed in partnership with mana whenua to reflect the unique cultural and geographical history of the neighbourhood.

Planning is also underway for a future 41,000sqm tower development to be built over the top the main station entrance on the corner of Wellesley Street and Mayoral Drive.

This station is part of the City Rail Link (CRL) project – a 3.45km underground rail link between Britomart and the Western Line and Maungawhau/Mount Eden Station.

The CRL transforms Waitematā Station (Britomart) from a terminating station into a through-station, allowing greater frequency, shorter travel times, fewer train change-overs and greater passenger capacity.

Tunnel construction between Waitematā Station (Britomart) and Te Waihorotiu Station is now complete, and the reinstated streetscapes above, including Te Komititanga and lower Albert Street, have been transformed into high-quality public spaces for people to enjoy.

These spaces include widened footpaths, native trees, outdoor furniture, and pavement designs reflecting the thoughtful cultural narratives and heritage of the area.

The station identity combines celestial and terrestrial elements inspired by the artwork of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei artist Graham Tipene.

At the Wellesley Street entrance, hanging rods mimic the flow of the Waihorotiu Stream and the flow of people as they travel through the station. Nestled in the middle is a kaitiaki (guardian) looking after the people and supporting the abundance of life-giving energy in the area. From one end of the concourse, you can see the curve of Te Waihorotiu’s Station design representing the curve of a waka.
