As part of the wider Unlock Henderson Programme, we’re planning a new playground in Henderson Park.

The theme for the new playground is Pūrākau of Panuku and Parekura - trail of white feathers. This theme was gifted by our mana whenua partners, Te Kawerau ā Maki.

Henderson Park has good infrastructure to support a playground. There is a car park nearby, toilets and a drinking fountain. It also provides sports fields, disc golf and some fitness equipment.

We’re currently developing a design for the new playground and will be asking the community what play equipment and features we should consider in the design.

Project information

To respond to current and future population growth, green spaces and community facilities need to evolve. We want to continue providing areas that are fit for purpose and well-used by lots of people.

Henderson Park is an established parkland setting with a network of existing shared paths and a good large residential catchment. It has existing recreational uses such as sports, disc golf and fitness equipment.

With existing park infrastructure already in place (such as a car park, toilet block and drinking fountain), Henderson Park is a good location for a new playground.

We’re not planning on building any more car parking around Henderson Park as part of this project, but car parking may form part of a future scope for other projects.

Henderson Park is in a flood plain, so the new playground will incorporate stormwater management (drainage) and robust materials (particularly around play surfacing) to mitigate potential impacts from stormwater flows or flood events.

At this stage, we hope it may be possible to start work on the playground in FY2028. But this will depend on the Henderson-Massey Local Board approving the final design, getting resource consent and securing the budget.

AK Have Your Say

You can tell us what you think we should consider when we design the playground by visiting akhaveyoursay from 6 August – 3 September 2026.

We want your feedback to help us finalise a playground design. We want to know what is important to you and understand what playground features you think we should consider in our design.

We’re also interested to know what you think we could do to make the area more welcoming and used by rangatahi/youth.

We haven’t made any final decisions about what playground equipment will be included but we have thought about spaces where we might provide for different age groups.
