Refreshing Catherine Plaza

In the 1960’s it was known as Catherine Street before it became a public space with the construction of the shopping centre. In 2008 the plaza underwent a renovation to include more landscape features such as native tree planting and low-wall seating. Since then, shops have changed or closed, and some antisocial behaviour has created safety concerns for the community. We’re aware there is a strong desire for improvement to Catherine Plaza amongst locals, Henderson-Massey Local Board, the business association, and WestCity.

Auckland Council has invested in Henderson’s future by leading this project to support the growing population, local businesses and ensure a thriving town centre.

What will it look like?

The project has delivered a completely refreshed and revitalised Catherine Plaza. The entrance point is open and welcoming, inviting you to meander along the boardwalk that weaves through native planting, retaining the existing tree cover.

The design improves visibility and there is additional lighting, including festoon lighting, along with CCTV to promote safety through design as well as prevention measures.

The end of the plaza allows for an outdoor dining space for adjacent businesses. There are natural and informal play areas and integrated seating, making the space inviting for all.

The design, developed in collaboration with Te Kawerau ā Maki, was inspired by the Waitākere Ranges - acknowledging West Auckland’s connection to this taonga mountain range.

Where are we now?

Construction was completed and the plaza reopened in early 2026.

We worked with businesses located within Catherine Plaza to minimise impacts on their trading and maintained access during usual working hours.

Community feedback

In early 2023, we held an eight week consultation through which we received feedback from the Henderson, community, NZ Police, Salvation Army, WestCity retailers, town centre retailers and local community groups and organisations.

The key themes we heard through your feedback were around seating and dining space, play elements, shelter and shade, lighting for both safety and decoration, planting and colour, activating the space through events, markets and performances and ensuring the space remains well maintained and attractive.

All the feedback was taken into consideration as the design team considered the design of the space, the types of planting, and the materials and colours to be used to create a more welcoming space.
