Following last month’s General Authority approval from Heritage New Zealand, good progress has been made across all areas of the Waiapu Precinct construction site.
Lower level
Work is continuing to extend the sewer line and watermain across Waiapu Lane. To keep vehicle access open for as long as possible, we are completing this work in sections. There will be limited periods when vehicle access to Waiapu Lane closes temporarily. A new temporary access road from Selwyn St has been opened to help manage traffic flow and access. Loading for the businesses on Waiapu Lane (Domino’s, Tendercare Laundromat) will be maintained throughout the works.

More of the retaining wall and stairs foundations connecting the lower and middle levels have been built. Trenching for new utilities in the centre of the block continues. As the trench extends towards the stairs, the main parking area will gradually be reduced.
Underground services and the tree pit near the shops (Angkor Bakery, Good Deal) have been installed. Work will now begin on kerbs and building up the layers of the new road. Work on the new vehicle entrance from Church St will begin in July and we will start laying kerbs in front of the shops, between Angkor Bakery and Meat World. We expect to open the parking area outside of these shops, along with the new vehicle access from Church Street, in October.

Upper level
A large section of new footpath has been laid on Gerrard Beeson Place. The base layers of the new road have been laid, and we expect to asphalt the first section of the new road at the end of this month. Construction of three new raised tables is well underway. These are located at the entrance on Arthur St and along Gerrard Beeson Place. The tree pit near Anytime Fitness is nearing completion and foundations for the new streetlights are being built.
We expect to open access to Gerrard Beeson Place from Arthur Street in late July. It will exit out onto Church Street.
After the new vehicle entrance is opened, work will begin on the new parking areas and connections to the middle level. Parking in this upper area will be reduced while construction is underway.
