The archeological finds, will now be documented, logged in the appropriate heritage databases, and removed from the works site.
Construction in the discovery areas will resume from Wednesday 13 May.
Following our last update on 24 March regarding the discovery of 19th-century rubbish deposits uncovered during construction works, we are pleased to say our application for a General Authority from Heritage New Zealand has been approved.
These and any future finds, will be documented, logged in the appropriate heritage databases, and removed from the works site.
This means work can recommence around these discovery sites, with activities resuming in these areas from Wednesday 13 May.
Gerrard Beeson Place
Work to build the new roadway on Gerrard Beeson Place has been continuing. We will now recommence work on the tree pit near Anytime Fitness and progress towards completing the new road. We expect to open access from Arthur Street in July.
Lower Level
We will now resume work on the lower level near the shops from Meat World along to Angkor Bakery. This includes completing the trench for underground services, building kerbs, gardens, drainage and the new vehicle entrance from Church Street.
The existing entrances on Church Street and Waiapu Lane will close from 13 May 2026. From this date, access in and out of the Waiapu Precinct will be via two driveways on Selwyn Street (see map below).
Loading and servicing access will be maintained for the businesses on Waiapu Lane.
We expect to open the parking area near Woolworths, along with the new vehicle access from Church Street, in October.
Work has progressed on the retaining walls and stairs that connect the lower level to the middle level.
