The Osterley Way street upgrade is about creating a better walking and cycling connection from Barrowcliffe Bridge through Manukau centre and linking up to Sharkey St.
The upgrade will affect the section from Putney Way to Manukau Station Road.
With the Manukau Civic Building and Western Annex complete, the next step is to upgrade the southern part of Osterley Way. The upgrade focuses on improving connections, safety, and the pedestrian and cycling environment, while enhancing the urban landscape with new planting and street furniture.
Background
Manukau Town Centre has been identified as a major regeneration and intensification area under AUDO’s ‘Transform Manukau’ programme. The town centre benefits from strong infrastructure, transport links, and public amenities, positioning it as a key location for urban renewal.
The project is supported by the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board and helps deliver on the local board’s priorities of creating accessible, reliable and safe transport options for all, thriving town centres, and attractive and welcoming public spaces.
Street upgrades will begin in summer 2026 and are expected to continue for 10 months.
Benefits
The upgrade will include:
- Full streetscape upgrade from Putney Way to Manukau Station Road.
- New two-way cycleway for part of the route, with a shared path along remaining sections.
- Pedestrian crossings moved to the main walking path.
- New trees and planting to improve shade and comfort.
- Kerb realignment at the bus station entrance to support bus movements.
