- Urban regeneration
Midtown is changing as major upgrades progress around Te Waihorotiu Station and the future City Rail Link.
We’re improving streets, public spaces and underground infrastructure to support a growing residential, business and visitor community.
Auckland Council is supporting midtown to become one of Auckland’s busiest and most connected neighbourhoods — with safer streets, better public transport links and more welcoming places to spend time.
What’s happening in midtown
Construction and streetscape upgrades are underway across the neighbourhood, including:
- Te Hā Noa
- Wellesley Street Bus Improvements
- Te Waihorotiu Station
- Watercare's wastewater upgrades
- Midtown access trial
Together, these projects are creating safer walking and cycling routes, improved transport connections and new public spaces for people to enjoy.
We know construction can be disruptive - our teams are working to minimise disruption while delivering long-term improvements for the neighbourhood.
Minimise disruption
- Most construction takes place during weekday daytime hours.
- We use noise and dust controls such as acoustic mats, enclosed cutting areas and careful site setup to reduce impacts on nearby residents and businesses. Louder works are planned for daytime where possible.
- Sometimes night work is required. We provide advance notice and take steps to reduce disturbance.
- Pedestrian access and essential vehicle access are maintained at all times. If usual loading or servicing areas are affected, alternative loading zones and access routes are provided nearby.
- Access to buildings and businesses is maintained throughout construction. We work closely with body corporates and property managers to manage impacts.
- Waste collection and service access points remain available throughout works.
Business support and activation
- We recognise construction can be challenging for small businesses. The Midtown Small Business Support Programme offers eligible businesses a free business connector service and microgrants.
- We’re working with property managers to add interest to empty storefronts until new tenants are in place. If you’re interested in being part of our vacant stores programme, please contact Heart of the City.
- We’re also working with Heart of the City on initiatives to improve safety in the city centre.
- Placemaking and activation programmes supported by the city centre targeted rate continue to bring people into midtown. Events, markets and street activations help showcase local businesses and create a vibrant neighbourhood during and after construction.
- Events and activities are regularly delivered to bring more people into midtown and support local businesses. You can read more about upcoming events here. If you’d like to participate, contact midtown@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz – we welcome expressions of interest from ground and first-floor businesses in the midtown area and can help with activity or promotion ideas.

Midtown’s future
When Te Waihorotiu Station and surrounding upgrades are complete, midtown will become a major transport hub and cultural heart of the city centre. Thousands more people will move through the area each day, with easier connections between trains, buses, walking and cycling.
New trees, public spaces, wider footpaths and improved streets will help create a vibrant, safe and welcoming neighbourhood for residents, workers, students and visitors.
