Just over two years ago, Waiwharariki Anzac Square opened in the heart of Takapuna.
Today it’s everything we hoped for – a vibrant, welcoming space that’s become a true focal point for the town centre.
“It has established itself as a great public space that has hosted some amazing community events – and we are delighted that it’s being so well used!”

A space for everyone
Waiwharariki Anzac Square isn’t just for events – it’s a place to relax, gather, and connect. Visitors can enjoy:
- Picnic tables and shaded seating
- Native plant rain gardens
- A water feature for kids to cool off on hot days
- Stunning Māori artwork telling the mana whenua story of Takapuna.
Thanks to toi whenua artists Wyvern Rosieur (Ngāti Manuhiri) and Hokimai-anahera Rosieur (Ngāti Manuhiri, Ngāpuhi, Te Aupōuri), the story of Takapuna is woven into the very fabric of the square. Striking lighting features and stylised gateway arches welcome visitors, decorated with patterns that reflect the natural world and the history of the whenua (land).
Bringing the community together
The Takapuna Beach Business Association has wholeheartedly embraced the space. Over the past two years, the square has hosted:
- The Christmas Carnival
- Takapuna Wellness Day
- Barking Mad Dog Market
- Sustainable ScrapNap Market
- The spectacular annual Takapuna Winter Lights.
There have also been other cultural celebrations, such as Matariki events and festivals. And of course, the much-loved Takapuna Sunday Market continues every week.
Connecting town and beach
Green, friendly, and full of life, the square helps link Takapuna’s bustling town centre to its iconic beach via Hurstmere Green.
It’s a space that truly reflects the beachside lifestyle that locals and visitors love.
What’s next?
Exciting developments are on the horizon. Kate explains, “We’re working with development partners to create new homes, shops, businesses, and eateries around the square. More people will be able to live, work, and play in the town centre and enjoy the beach lifestyle that Takapuna offers.”
Before these projects begin, some land around the square has been leased to Pacific Padel, and by early 2026, three glass padel courts will be installed – introducing this fast-growing sport to Takapuna.
