The Waiapu Precinct is now under construction in Onehunga.
The Precinct will provide a more inviting and well-connected town centre area for Onehunga, along with provision for future housing and a new supermarket. The project includes the creation of new green spaces, a public plaza, a family-friendly play space, infrastructure upgrades, and improved walking and cycling connections with Onehunga Mall.

Since starting Phase 1, the construction team have been mobilising in the middle terrace and undertaking underground testing. This month the team expanded the site area to include the upper terrace carpark, and last week began drainage activities.
Upcoming works – Gerrard Beeson Place:
In early August, the current works area in the upper terrace will be reinstated for the service lane to be diverted through the carpark (refer the Phase 1 map below for specific set up), to enable physical works along Gerrard Beeson Place to start.
Within Gerrard Beeson Place, the following activities are planned as part of Phase 1:
-
Wastewater infrastructure upgrades (within the Gerrard Beeson Place eastern footpath) and speed table construction at the Arthur Street entrance to Gerrard Beeson Place, starting the week of 4 August 2025
-
Tree pit construction (7 along Gerrard Beeson Place), expected to start late Sept 2025
-
Stormwater system upgrade and utility trenching
-
Footpath and driveway crossing improvements, and carriageway asphalt, expected early 2026.
To safely undertake these activities but still maintain thoroughfare, Gerrard Beeson Place will become one way only for southbound vehicles, via our diversion.
Vehicle access to properties on Gerrard Beeson will be mostly maintained. There will be times during the wastewater and footpath upgrades where works will be across driveways/vehicle crossings. The construction team will be working closely with those affected for alternative access or appropriate timings of the work to minimise disruption.
During the construction of the speed table across Gerrard Beeson Place at the Arthur Street entrance, there will be a detour for vehicles to enter via Selwyn Street.
Upcoming works – Lower Carpark
To keep carparks available for as long as possible for shoppers and the public, the construction team have not yet taken the full extent of the Phase 1 works area. Expansion into the full Phase 1 area, including the lower carpark area is still on track, and is expected in September 2025.
