Works continuing to progress well into the break for Waiapu Precinct
11 December 2025
- Onehunga
The Waiapu Precinct is now under construction in Onehunga.
The Precinct will provide a more inviting and well-connected town centre area for Onehunga, along with provision for future housing and a new supermarket. The project includes the creation of new green spaces, a public plaza, a family-friendly play space, infrastructure upgrades, and improved walking and cycling connections with Onehunga Mall.
Work has been progressing well in Waiapu as we look to the season's break. Construction will pause over the holiday period, with the final day of work being Friday 19 December 2025. The team will return on Monday 12 January 2026.
Where safe, construction areas will be reduced and additional carparking will be made available during this break.
Upper Tier (along Gerrard Beeson Place)
Work in the upper tier of the carpark continues to progress well. Most of the stormwater upgrades are now complete, and five of the six new tree pits/garden beds are nearing completion.
The final garden bed will be completed early in the new year, timed to align with footpath works planned around the large oak tree.
Middle Tier
In the middle tier, installation of the new sewer line and tree felling is complete. Construction has begun on the new retaining wall, which will form the interface with future development in the area.
Lower Tier
In the lower tier, closest to the shops, another 50 metres of new watermain has been installed. Around half of the wastewater line through the culvert (beneath the footpath) has now been replaced, and all stormwater works are complete.
Our team are progressing with underground utilities, including low-voltage (LV) power installation and future-proofing ducts for high-voltage (HV) power.
As drainage work progressed near the shops, we have been able to temporarily reopen carparks near Church Street. These spaces will remain available for public use until works resume in 2026.
Church Street Safety Improvements
The relocation and upgrade of the pedestrian crossing on Church Street was successfully completed mid-November 2025.
The new pedestrian crossing has been relocated to outside the Onehunga Library and provides better and safer access to the library, Community Centre and bus services on Church Street.
