The Gantry is a modern landmark with industrial roots

With its striking steel frame and elevated walkway, many assume it’s a preserved fragment from the days of the working tank farm. But despite its rugged look, the Gantry is a modern piece of architecture - designed and built to reflect the past while serving a contemporary purpose. 

Unveiled in 2011 as part of the launch of Silo Park - stage one of the Wynyard Quarter - the Gantry forms a key axis in the larger urban masterplan for Auckland’s waterfront, which is embedded in connecting the area both from east to west (along the waterfront) and north to south.   

The Gantry offers 360-degree views over the Waitematā Harbour, and when the tank farm was still in place, it served as one of the best lookouts to observe above the industrial landscape. Today, its elevated position continues to give visitors a unique vantage point across the waterfront.   

Designed as a homage to the area's industrial history, the Gantry’s steel structure evokes the materials and forms of the site's working past, while its fully accessible lift ensures that everyone can experience the views it offers. 

The Gantry is also a cultural space, hosting public art installations and exhibitions. It has been a recurring feature of the Auckland Festival of Photography, and currently showcases Whai, a contemporary artwork that brings new meaning and visual interest to the structure.
