A beautifully landscaped and inviting public plaza, is coming to Ponsonby Road, part of a new mixed-use precinct that will reinvigorate the Three Lamps end of the popular destination street.

The airspace above the Auckland Council-owned site at 2 Pompallier Terrace has been sold and will be transformed into a public plaza with underground public parking, incorporated into Urban Collective’s luxurious new mixed-use development, Pompallier on Ponsonby

This project has been several years in the making. The sale was approved by Auckland Council’s Finance and Performance Committee in December 2021, with support from Auckland Transport and the Waitematā Local Board.

As part of the high-quality urban regeneration work that we are known for, redevelopment partnerships like this provide an income for council while encouraging local investment in high-quality homes, shops and businesses close to good transport connections and amenities.

Providing pedestrian connections to Ponsonby Road, Cowan Street and Pompallier Terrace, the new plaza will invite people in, giving them an opportunity to pause and rest amongst a beautifully landscaped space, including a grove of native trees.

The airspace above and around the new plaza will include retail, hospitality, commercial space and apartments that carefully incorporates the new public space to allow for outdoor dining and social interaction.

The redevelopment will move the previous open-air car park underground and add bicycle parking, electric car charging and a new public toilet, all of which will remain in council ownership.

Physical works on the site began in November 2024, with completion anticipated by the end of 2026.

While work is underway, visitors to the area will see the site hoarded, with wayfinding information to the nearest public car parks at 16 Redmond Street, Ponsonby and 5 - 7 Margaret Street, Freemans Bay. It will also direct people to the nearest public toilets at Western Park, Freemans Bay.
