The much-loved Henderson Bike Hub is continuing to breathe life into a future development site on Edmonton Road.
It's transforming what could have been an empty lot into a busy community space centred around cycling.
The EcoMatters-run Henderson Bike Hub is currently housed at 14 Edmonton Road, a piece of land earmarked for future development. The bike hub has grown into one of Henderson’s most popular neighbourhood assets, offering bike lessons, repairs and a welcoming environment for anyone wanting to get on a bike.
Shane Price, known locally as ‘The Bicycle Chap’, has been involved with the bike hub since it began. He has seen first-hand an increase in people cycling in the area thanks to the work of the bike hub and ongoing improvements to the cycle network.
“There are definitely more people cycling around Henderson than when we started,” says Mr Price. “I now see parents riding with their children to and from school. There’s a real community feel about cycling, it's a friendly atmosphere with people ringing their bells and waving hello.”
Mr Price believes council support for cycling and community activities like the bike hub is important because there are people who really want to go cycling but don’t know where to start.
“In my community, there are adults who come to us wanting their children to learn to cycle but they don’t know how to ride themselves. It’s not uncommon for me to help parents and their children learn to cycle at the same time and we do that in a welcoming space in their own neighbourhood. It’s the most heartwarming thing, seeing parents learn to cycle with their kids.”
The bike hub also refurbishes donated bikes and offers basic maintenance services, helping remove cost barriers and ensuring more people can travel safely on two wheels.
Auckland Council says the Henderson Bike Hub is a strong example of how future development land can be used to support community activity while plans are being finalised.
Richard Davison, Auckland Council’s Priority Location Director in the Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO), says temporary activations can help keep momentum in an area.
“Sites waiting for development to begin can be left ‘as is’ for some time while plans are finalised,” explains Mr Davison. “In some cases, land might not be developed for several years. By supporting community activations such as the bike hub, we are showing the community, private developers and other organisations that the council hasn’t just sold the land and moved on, but that we remain committed to ongoing improvements and investment in the area.”
He says the bike hub fits well alongside AUDO and Henderson-Massey Local Board plans to improve cycling and walking connections in Henderson, giving people more transport choices and opportunities for more active lifestyles.
“Wai Horotiu is a new walking and cycling path that we are planning,” says Mr Davison. “It will connect through Tui Glen Reserve (behind Westwave), on Vitasovich Avenue and along Edmonton Road; completing a gap in Henderson’s walking and cycling network.”
A network of bike hubs
Henderson is one of 14 bike hubs across Tāmaki Makarau. Each bike hub operates in a welcoming community space and aims to encourage more people to cycle by developing bike skills, building confidence and knowledge in a supportive neighbourhood environment.
If you’re curious about cycling, haven’t been on a bike for years, or want your whānau to learn together, your local bike hub is a great place to start.
