The Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO) joined with representatives from across the council whānau for Te Hui Taumata at the Aotea Centre on Tuesday 17 February.

This expo-style event offered a valuable opportunity for Elected Members and staff to get together.

Bringing governance representatives and council teams together in person, Te Hui Taumata allows teams to share their work, answer questions and help new and returning elected members better understand the many roles, priorities and initiatives that shape how Auckland Council operates.

Hosting the AUDO stand, Brenna Waghorn, Head of Project Planning and Consents; Jenny Larking, Head of Growth and Regeneration Delivery; and Patrick Dougherty, General Manager spoke with local board members and councillors about how the AUDO fosters development and regeneration in the city centre and priority locations. The level of interest in AUDO’s role and projects was strong, with many elected members stopping by to learn more.

A recurring theme in conversations was curiosity about our current priority locations and how future locations will be identified. Elected members asked thoughtful questions about progress, sequencing and overall priorities, as well as about specific projects including the Maungawhau Station precinct, plans for mixed-use development and a public space on Wynyard Point and upgrades to the Northcote town centre. There was also interest in our work to support growth in Drury, and great feedback on our A City of Neighbourhoods podcast series as a valuable way of bringing the broader growth story to life.

Discussions also reflected aspirations for Auckland’s growth. Elected members highlighted the value of developing clear masterplans or structure plans for key growth locations and centres along railway lines. There was strong support for well-articulated, coordinated planning and increased investment in enabling infrastructure to support growth, alongside more consistent engagement with local boards.

Many were keen to see our high levels of engagement continue in meaningful ways.  Suggestions included continuing to work closely with local boards, strengthening support for community organisations, and ensuring we continue to listen carefully to local voices. There was strong advocacy for diverse housing typologies, including Nightingale-style developments such as CoHaus in Grey Lynn, and for making space available for arts and creative activity within urban regeneration projects.

Overall, the hui reinforced the value of direct engagement with elected members. The conversations provided useful insight into local priorities and expectations and highlighted the importance of transparent communication and collaboration as we shape Auckland’s future neighbourhoods.
